Best Grocery Store
Best Health/Organic Food Store
You = Awesome. Us = Grateful. We are honored to have been voted the best grocery store in Frederick and are appreciative of this community that has allowed us to grow, thrive, and achieve what we have today. It is our pleasure to be able to offer you the best local, organic, fair trade, artificial-ingredient-free, and delicious foods and products we can find. Thank you!
Over more than 40 years, thousands of people have given their time, talents, and old refrigerators (you know, back before we were an established business) to make this cooperative endeavor work. A venture that began with a few Frederick families buying as a group has blossomed into a full-service grocery store with over 5,500 owners. And we could not be prouder of the accomplishments and humbled by the generosity of this community.
As befits a store with unique origins, we have a unique business model with a triple bottom line. That means that we take our commitment to having a positive impact on our community and the environment as seriously as our financial success. In fact, we view our economic success as the tool through which we aim to achieve the following results in our local region:
1. A prosperous, just, and vibrant local food economy
2. A cooperatively-owned, successful business serving as a practical alternative to conventional business models
3. A community whose members are educated about food, health and wellness choices, and the social and environmental issues in food production
4. A model for the sustainable use of environmental resources
You could say that we want it all – to have a financially successful business that is an active part of making healthy, happy communities living in sustainable, environmentally responsible ways. Yeah, that’s lofty. But we don’t see these goals as impossible. We don’t think that business success should come at the expense of people and the planet. Happily, we know you believe that too.
In the last fiscal year alone, we raised more than $42,000 for local nonprofits through our Bring a Bag for Change program. That means our shoppers brought in nearly 850,000 reusable bags to pack their groceries in. More than three-quarters of a million bags were not thrown into the waste stream or blown away into waterways. Wow, Frederick! You are making a huge difference!
We are deeply grateful to the people who voted for us and who participate every day in creating the world they want to live in. In true cooperative fashion, we welcome everyone – not just Common Market owners – to come to our store, tell us what you love and how we can serve you better, and (most importantly) to see yourself as a better-future-builder.
