If you haven’t noticed by now, Ms. Cassandra Mullinix has begun to post pictures from her SXSW adventures over on her Bucket Of Rock blog. We’ll continue to post her diary entries this week because, well, she’s awesome. Check out what she had to say about Friday, March 20, after you check out parts one, two, three, four and five:
It’s a muggy morning. The sky is threatening a soggy SXSW today and at just about the same time I get to my first outdoor showcase, the rain drops begin invading. I’m at Home Slyce Pizza on South Congress, and The Oh Sees have huddled themselves under a tiny tent on the pavement. Their sound intensifies with the speed of the rain drops and a drippy kid attempts to crowd surf.
Song three plays and I’m too distracted to figure out which song it actually is. I’m trying to weasel my way under a vendor tent where the band is just barely in my line of site. Eventually, I hit my rendezvous point and start snapping photos when the enemy front – little rivers of rain drops on the black top – are beginning to attack the band’s sound gear. John Dwyer’s guitar shorts out. He switches guitars and they get one more song in before having to call it quits.
Many of the outdoor showcases will persevere today, but my camera gear certainly will not. I opt for the best indoor showcase on my list, a 30 band, 2 stage show sponsored by Stereogum at The Hole In The Wall. I’ve seen a few of the bands already, but the easy button is irresistible after a hard week. Wand, Girlpool, Speedy Otiz, Paperhaus, Rozwell Kid (who I never get sick of seeing) and Jeff The Brotherhood (who I could only stay on my feet long enough for two songs during the previous night’s performance) are gems.
