We’ll round out the week in videos with Hurray For The Riff Raff’s official clip for “The Body Electric.” It has more than 78,000 views. Be impressed. This also serves as a reminder that indeed we still have two tickets we plan on giving away for the concert on Flying Dog’s front lawn this Saturday. You can still enter. It’s easy. And it’s free. There is very little in life better than easy and free. And Hurray For The Riff Raff. And Flying Dog. And … you get it.
June 2015
Yesterday, we spoke with Chris from Bumper Jacksons about their upcoming set at the Urbana Music Festival this weekend. Today, we have a Q&A with Eddie of Fast Eddie & The Slowpokes, who will also be taking the Urbana Music Festival stage on Saturday. The music is set to kick off at 2 p.m., and it’s the perfect primer for an evening of great music on Flying Dog’s front lawn that night (you know you can win tickets, right?). But we digress. For now, check out what Eddie had to say about some of his favorite places to play around the country and how his band came up with such a neat name. Enjoy!
So, take us back to the beginning. How did Fast Eddie & The Slowpokes did get started? How long have you been together? When/where/how did you meet?
We got together in 2011 for a one-time gig for the D.C. Blues Society Fish Fry. We all met at the Old Bowie Town Grille blues jam. After the fish fry gig, we got a lot of favorable comments so we decided to give this band thing a try, and we’ve never looked back.
Where are some of your favorite venues/places to play around the country and why?
Our favorite place has to be the Hard Rock Cafe in Memphis. That’s where we performed during the 2013 International Blues Challenge. We also liked the Pride of the Susquehanna River Boat that we have played the last two years for their Blues Cruise. Our newest favorite is the Villain & Saint in Bethesda. It just opened in April but it is very music- and musician-centered with a sound man, a light man, a great dance floor and even a green room.
How did you guys come up with the name, “Fast Eddie And The Slowpokes?”
When we did the first DCBS gig, we didn’t even have a name. But when asked on the spot, I threw out Fast Eddie & The Slowpokes, and it just stuck!
What’s your impression of the local music scene, both here in Frederick and in D.C. and Baltimore? Do you think Frederick is thriving and growing consistently, or is it not really on your radar?
The whole area is filled with places to play but there is such a disparity in a venue’s level of actual support for music. Just because they book bands doesn’t equate to support. That includes willingness to pay a reasonable wage to bands, promoting events on their own social media, websites, signage, posting flyers. While bands have a shared responsibility in this business of promotion, it is often the venue’s perspective that it is solely the band’s responsibility. There are a few venues that still book great music seven nights a week so patrons come no matter who is playing because they know the music will be good. That creates a built in crowd that can be boosted by the band’s fan draw.
Can you tell us a little about some of the band’s best moments? Conversely, can you tell us about some of the band’s lowest moments?
We won the D.C. Blues Society Battle of the Bands in 2012 and represented DCBS at the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. We were also nominated for a WAMMIE in 2013.
Who are some of your major influences and why?
The Nighthawks, Fabulous Thunderbirds, as well as many others. Their success speaks for itself, but they inspire us through their continued re-defenition of themselves without compromising their roots music tradition.
Can you name some local artists we should keep an eye on who we might not already know about?
Moonshine Society, Anthony “Swamp Dog” Clark Blues Band. There’s such a rich blues tradition in the DMV, it’s hard to only name a few.
And finally, what can we expect from your set at the Urbana Music Festival?
You can expect a wang dang doodle of a set combining blues, soul, and rock-n-roll that will make you shake your tail feather! You can leave your lawn chairs at home.
We’re going to go ahead and post this press photo of Hurray For The Riff Raff because A) They will be on Flying Dog’s front lawn this weekend. B) We are still giving away tickets to the show. And C) Unfortunately, our interview with the band fell through at the very last minute. So, in lieu of a Q&A that you might not have read anyway, here’s Alynda looking mysterious and awesome. There are still tickets left, friends. You won’t want to miss it.
The Urbana Music Festival. Have you heard of it? It’s set to go down on Saturday at 9020 Amelung Street in Urbana. The fun begins at 2 p.m. The music? Fast Eddie & The Slowpokes and Bumper Jacksons. We’ll have a Q&A with Mr. Eddie later this week, but for now, we thought we’d post this exchange we recently had with Chris Ousley of Bumper Jacksons. Among the things we discuss? How the D.C.-area band got started, how they mix New Orleans with Appalachia, and, not to be outdone, a very depressing story about traveling to a job in Tennessee in the band’s early days. To learn more about the group, click here. Oh, and in case you were wondering: Yes. This would be the perfect way to get yourself ready for Hurray For The Riff Raff at Flying Dog later that night.
So, take us back to the beginning. How did Bumper Jacksons did get started? How long have you been together? When/where/how did you meet?
The Bumper Jacksons started 4 years ago with Jess and I meeting in a front yard bluegrass jam at a keg-fundraiser for a bicycle co-op in D.C. We fused our love of jazz and old time — which was scorned by the hardcore bluegrassers at that jam — into a powerhouse duo and began our DIY striving for a new American dream. Slowly but surely, we found some like-minded individuals to come with us on the journey so the band (and the van) got bigger.
I see you guys get out and tour quite a bit. Where are some of your favorite venues/places to play around the country and why?
Its probably a tie between music festivals and good-sounding rooms. Some of my favorite are right around here at home: The Birchmere, Watermelon Park Fest, The Creative Alliance, Bethesda Blues & Jazz and the Shepherdstown Opera House. Of course, perhaps my favorite place to play is still in the middle of the night at a fireside next to a pair of old-time fiddlers.
Your website says you are painting America’s story from New Orleans to Appalachia. How do you think you achieve that sound? And of all the sounds you guys incorporate, which one might be your favorite/most influential.
So, Jess and I built the original concept of the band around things we could dance to. If you are into traditional Cajun or Tennessee two-stepping and waltzes (Jess and I’s favorite style), you’d notice that 99 percent of our stuff fits the dance. Jess and I would go out two-stepping to lots of local groups and noticed how easily the styles could be melded together. I think that’s how we found that signature “bumper jacksons groove” that we talk about in the band (“Coffee Mama” a is a good example) which feels somewhere between a bluegrass and swing backbeat. It’s not totally new ground to be broken, however. While we’re doing it our own way, there’s a lot of country influence in the city and city influence in the country. In fact, if you listen to the material that Bill Monroe was sourcing from, he was pulling from the same sources as us: Appalachian fiddlers, Mississippi bluesman and old jazz soloists.
What’s your impression of the local music scene, both here in Frederick and down in D.C. Do you think Frederick is thriving and growing consistently, or is it not really on your radar?
I see some good bands coming out of Frederick (surrounding county included) but I’d like to see more. There are some good weekly and monthly series, plenty of bars with live music, and a few nice higher-end performance spaces. But as is the issue with many smaller cities, finding the spaces for the mid-level national and regional acts with room for about 100 and 200 and good production is hard. At least in my personal experience. I think when the spaces are there, the bands will thrive. I wouldn’t mind seeing a healthy busking culture along market street, either.
Downtown D.C. has the opposite problem — LOTS of music clubs but with super high rent. Most the musicians I know that come from D.C. live in the suburbs surrounding it since they can’t afford to live downtown anymore. I think this inhibits free collaboration between musicians and a truly thriving scene. If you look at places like New Orleans, it’s my opinion that the No. 1 reason the city has a thriving music scene is that musicians can live in the neighborhoods they perform in. Luckily, the D.C .Arts Commission does a lot to alleviate pressures for D.C. resident artists, but I think tapping at the source of the issue would allow for more long term results. But I don’t think you were asking me about gentrification or urban development issues.
Can you tell us a little about some of the band’s best moments? Conversely, can you tell us about some of the band’s lowest moments?
I’ll give you one of each.
High Moment: Receiving a standing ovation at a sold-out Birchmere concert this past New Year’s Eve. The first thing I did in 2015 was to sing harmonies and take a guitar solo with the Seldom Scene.
Low Moment: Jess and I were on one of our first tours ever and traveled eight hours to play a show in Tennessee because we really needed the money. The venue was closed when we got there, and when we called the owner he said, “Yeah I know I booked you, but I’m at the lake. It’s Memorial Day Weekend. Why would you want to do a show? Everyone else is at the lake and no one will show up.” So we ate our PBJs and slept in our car that night.
Who are some of your major influences and why?
The Skillet Lickers, Tom Waits, Bill Monroe because of their ability to take a multitude of sounds and ideas and create one iconic sound that was all their own. Bessie Smith, Sam Chatmon, Louis Armstrong because SOUL POWER. And our friends and picking buddies at Clifftop, Blackpot, Galax, and Watermelon Park Festivals and in our own backyards.
Can you name some local artists we should keep an eye on who we might not already know about?
Anna & Elizabeth, Ultrafaux, Charm City Junction, Letitia Van Sant and the Bonafides, Sunrise Review, Bud’s Collective, The Woodshedders, Only Lonesome and Fellow Creatures.
And finally, what can we expect from your set at the Urbana Music Festival?
Dancing people from 2 to 92 years old. Our buddy Ahren Bucheister is sitting in on electric guitar. Bad jokes, good music.
Today’s video comes from Mechanical River and their Buzzsession for “I Need Love.” Why do we post that? Because Mechanical River are opening for Hurray For The Riff Raff this Saturday on Flying Dog’s front lawn. And in case you forgot, we are giving away two free tickets to see Mechanical River and Hurray For The Riff Raff all week on Frederick Playlist! All you have to do is sign up. Nothing is better than free, friends. Nothing is better than free.
Do You Want To Win Two Tickets To See Hurray For The Riff Raff? Of Course You Do.
Itttttttt’ssssss back! Flying Dog’s always-awesome Summer Sessions concert series is back this summer, and we, miraculously, are still around, too. Thus, let’s give away some tickets. First up? Hurray For The Riff Raff! They will be riffing and raffing all over the Flying Dog lawn Saturday night and if you like what you hear above, all you have to do is follow us on Twitter or like us on Facebook to be entered into a drawing for the tickets. If you have the name that is picked, we’ll be in touch, you’ll be able to take your most-loved loved-one to a great concert on Saturday, and we’ll even throw in a few free (brand new!) beer koozies for good measure.
We’ll be doing this at least two more times this summer, when Surfer Blood takes the Flying Dog stage on July 18 and Of Montreal comes back to town on Aug. 22. But we’ll talk more about those dates when the time is right. For now, get to likin,’ get to followin,’ and get the ball rolling for one of the best Saturday nights of your life. Great beer. Great music. And an annoying guy introducing the opening band. Hey – two out of three ain’t bad, right? Let’s hope so.

We’re going to start the day with this photo of Heavy Lights at the Maryland Craft Beer Festival last month. Heavy Lights, if you remember, opened for Real Estate at one of last year’s Summer Sessions on Flying Dog’s front lawn. And, in case you were wondering, yes, we will again be at all of this year’s Flying Dog Summer Sessions shows, giving away koozies, introducing some bands, and chatting with all the fine individuals who are kind enough to stop by and say hello. But we’ll have more on that later. For now, just gaze at these pretty, lovely people. Photo courtesy of Cassandra Mullinix. For more of her photos, visit https://www.facebook.com/bucketofrock.
Boy, it’s hot. A perfect day for Alive @ Five, right? Right. So tonight, around 5 p.m., head on down to the creek and check out Fuzzy Match (above) funk-in it up under the sun. You know you want to. Elsewhere this weekend, we have the much-anticipated Lettuce Jam in Middletown at the Gude Farm. Tons of great things are set to go down there, especially with Southern Charm, who we spoke to earlier this week. Speaking of this week, you’re going to come to the Seaknuckle record release show at the old News-Post building next month, right? Just checking. Anyway, The Furr, they who interviewed themselves for a Q&A, will be rocking and rolling with the fine young lads in Old Indian at Cafe Nola tomorrow night. Also of note this weekend: Blind Man Leading, a name we haven’t seen in forever and a day, will be hanging out at Big Cork Vineyards, and if we weren’t so busy, we’d be super interested in seeing how they’re doing these days. There’s some bluegrass. There are prog-rock legends (or at least, so we are told) OHO doing what they do at Elk Run. Dis-Funk-Shun is always a fun name to type. Laura Mae Socks And Her Baked Goods wins the award for best band name of the week, and she will be at The Opera House in Shepherdstown tomorrow night as well (the same day as The Local Playlist, a show you’ll be listening to online? Maybe? Hopefully? Hey – we gave away free tickets twice last week!). We have the Blues Vultures. We have Mountain Air. We have Klepto Radio. We have Dough Boy And Diddy Summer Jam. And, of course, we have Too Much Trouble Band. Summer is kicking into its fullest effect, friends. Don’t sit around – the world needs you out there. Listening. Loving. Learning. We’ll be back next week to give away some Flying Dog tickets. So … meet back here Monday morning? Sounds like a plan.

The Nighthawks don’t really need to release albums anymore. They’ve played with Pinetop Perkins, welcomed Warren Haynes, backed up Elvin Bishop and opened for everyone from Muddy Waters to Carl Perkins. As far as the D.C.-area blues scene goes, they’ve long been one of the marquee names, having played as a unit since 1974 (which varying lineup changes, of course). They tour nationally. They have released dozens of records. They won Acoustic Album of the Year at the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Awards in May 2011.
They are — relatively speaking, at least — a big deal.
Yet still they grace us with more recordings, more products. “Back Porch Party,” the band’s latest live and acoustic set, might be light on new material, but it sure packs the type of authentic punch that the best Nighthawks albums offer. Recorded at Montrose Studio in Richmond, Virginia, in front of a seemingly small crowd ready to play their part, these 12 performances are a delight and a lesson: the former, because the ‘Hawks can still do this type of thing all these years later, and the latter because there are few people in this area who have mastered traditional blues as well as these guys have through the years.
It begins with “Rock This House,” a song you’ve probably heard 10,000 times. But despite its ubiquitousness, these guys make it pop, turned-down instruments and all. Plus, it sets the mood for a wildly fun evening, demonstrating beyond the shadow of a doubt that plugged in or not, there’s still a nest of energy begging to be found within acoustic instruments. When Mark Stutso takes a tiny solo on his single drum about halfway through, it’s interesting enough to engage 50 or 5,000 people. Ditto for guitarist Paul Bell’s acoustic shredding. Jimmie Rodgers would be proud.
Speaking of blues legends, Willie Dixon’s “Tiger In Your Tank” keeps the tempo up, a train beat fueled by a single snare doing its best to keep the engine revved. Matching that energy, note for note, is Mark Wenner’s harmonica, which trades lines with the vocals in a back-and-forth repetition that keeps all ears on alert at all times. Ike Turner’s “Matchbox” goes on to boogie its way through the set, losing nothing due to a lack of electricity. In fact, each time the chorus ends with the song’s signature, “Got my clothes in a matchbox/I’m gonna forget about you,” the line loses none of its bite despite the simplistic arrangement.
But to play the blues, you have to be willing slow it down with effect, and The Nighthawks wouldn’t have the longevity they’ve enjoyed if they couldn’t do as much. “Rollin’ Stone” is a trip to a back porch in the Delta, its swampy feel making for a muggy listen, complete with traditional guitar noodling and a spastic harp that rolls like the stone these guys are singing about. “Down To My Last Million Tears” speeds the formula up slightly, but it cuts even deeper, especially with an opening shout like this: “You made me cry.”
Such sadness is alleviated, though, when Tom Waits’ “Way Down In The Hole” gets a clever makeover and forces a smile across any fan of “The Wire” as wide and white as anything painted on McNulty’s face. This take stays true to form for the most part, that slithering bass line immediately recognizable and those harmonica chirps laying claim to their territory. It gets fun when, about two minutes into it, the guys switch up the groove, turning into a straight blues for a handful of measures before getting back to the sounds any Stringer Bell fan should know by heart. If nothing else, the band earns all of the cool points for something like this.
Even though saying as much is a bit reductive at this point: The Nighthawks probably have all of the cool points anyway. Check out the lone original, “Back To The City,” to remind yourself of how great they are at doing what they do. The track is a throwback to the juke joints that inspired the band to form in the first place. It’s a little rockabilly, a little blues, a little swing, and a lot of fun. The song a tiny piece of perfection working as an ending note on a record that strips these guys down at the compromise of nothing.
And that makes all the sense in the world for The Nighthawks in 2015. Do what you do. Do it as well as you’ve always done it. And allow the rest of the pieces to fall into place. That’s what “Back Porch Party” does best: It reminds longtime fans that these guys are still on their A-game all the while inviting other listeners to get hip to what they’ve been doing for decades now.
Back porch or no porch, this is a party you can’t miss. Don’t be late.

Today’s video? Check out Katie Powderly’s official clip for “Tables, Turning.” Why post this on Thursday, June 11, 2015? Because on Saturday, June 13, 2015, Ms. Powderly will be headlining the first-ever Lettuce Jam in Middletown. Plus, we had a Q&A with Southern Charm yesterday, so why not give everybody one final reminder of what Mr. Gude has going down this weekend by posting this video? Sound good? Good. You can find all you need to know about the event here, and for those looking for a music schedule, click here. Saturday is only two days away, friends. You wouldn’t want to sit at home on such a beautiful weekend, you know.
