Well. First and foremost, a big, huge, gigantic, wet, sloppy, fabulous thank-you kiss goes out to everyone who had a hand in making this year’s Frederick Music Showcase happen. Freddie Long brought his band and those super-awesome horns. Silent Old Mtns. brought a new song and a whole lot of tambourine. Katie Powderly brought grace and our new favorite drummer in all the land. And Retro/Ricole Barnes brought history and his mother onto the Weinberg stage. We can’t thank you – and you, and you, and you, and you – enough for coming to check it out (that is, if you were one of the people who came; if you weren’t … well, then that was mean).
Also of note: A bearhug of gratitude is thrown toward Todd C. Walker for playing the lobby, much like he did last year, and The Cellar Door, which was packed to the brim with Showcase-goers and karaoke-enthusiasts after the Weinberg events wound down. Plus, all the people at the Weinberg, most notably John, John and Greg, whom we love with every inch of our silly hearts, and Shawn Hocherl of Showtime Sound, who manned the soundboard (and recording equipment) like only he can. These are people we should all adore emphatically. Really, people. Emphatically.
So, what now? Well, we mentioned what we have in store for March, and you’re going to check that out, right? Right?!?! Stitch Early. An open mic. Fun. Happiness. Joy. All of that fabulous stuff. But how about April and May? Welp, some of you may have noticed in recent days that we are planning to host an Art Market at 200 East. Now, this … this will be fun. Running from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, it promises to be The Art Event Of The Century (especially considering how Artomatic is slated to happen as well). It’s free and we are happy to announce that Frederick Playlist has tapped Lost Keys, who we love, to enhance the art-going experience with music for the afternoon. You know them from The Cellar Door … don’t you?
And then there’s this: As you might have heard from someone onstage last Thursday, we are hosting something called Skate Jam with Pitcrew at 200 East on April 23 (yes, we wince at the name “Skate Jam,” too). The idea for the event will be simple. Pitcrew and its dudes will set up shop outside, skating and (presumably) jamming away for all to see. But, for as long as we’ve been doing this, we’ve heard the rumbles about how sad it is that we haven’t had any younger musical talent play any of our events.
Well, this is the part where we say we want you. Yes, you!
We are looking for three high-school/college-aged bands to play the event on April 23. In order to be considered for the bill, you have to email cmcguire@newspost.com with some links to your music. SoundCloud. BandCamp. Facebook. YouTube. Friendster. Qwikster. Whatever. Just drop us a note about your band and we’ll be in touch about all the things that come along with the job – i.e. money and fun.
So …well … what are you waiting for? Let’s keep this thing going for as long as the city will allow (hey there, downtown hotel!), and let’s have some fun while doing it.
