Today’s photo is courtesy of Marc Millman and features JJ Grey and Mofro performing at Irving Plaza in New York. This matters to us because JJ Grey and Mofro are coming to town this Saturday to kick off Flying Dog’s Summer Sessions concert series over at their brewery. This matters to you because you – yes, you! – could check it out for free if you head on over to our giveaway here at Frederick Playlist. The contest ends in about one day and 14 hours (but really: who’s counting?!), and you wouldn’t want to miss out on such a promising chance to experience some pretty great Southern Soul this weekend, now would you? No. No, you wouldn’t.
Flying Dog
Sometimes, we like to take a quick moment to ask artists what went into the making of one of their songs. And sometimes, the artists tell us. And sometimes (OK … all the time!) the explanations are fun to read.
Thus, behold Thomas Wynn And The Believers’ “Hold On,” from their album “The Reason.” Above these words, you can find a live performance of the song. Below these words, you can find out what went into the making of it, according to Mr. Thomas Wynn himself. Check it out:
I wrote that song after a pretty tough time in my life. Then in the pre-production of “The Reason,” my friend and the producer of that album, Tony Battaglia, and I reworked some of it, changing some lines here and there, making the whole idea more concise. I liked working that way for that album. Tony is a very seasoned producer and writer, and I am grateful to have worked with him.
And we are grateful that Wynn and his Believers are coming to town this Saturday as part of Flying Dog’s Summer Concert Series. Tickets are still on sale for the event, though on the off chance you haven’t heard it by now – and you’re looking for an alternative way to nab a pair of tickets – we are giving away two freebies on this very website. And after hearing a taste of what Thomas Wynn has to offer … well, why on earth would you want to miss out on any of this?!
Hey, have you entered our contest yet? You know, the one where you can win two free tickets to the first of four Flying Dog Summer Concert Series shows set to go down this Saturday? The one that features JJ Grey and Mofro? Oh, you haven’t entered yet? Because you should. And as today’s Video Of The Day proves, the night is going to be filled to the brim with some greater-than-great music. Behold Thomas Wynn And The Believers, who will open the show on Saturday, and a performance of their soulful “I Don’t Regret.” Hey – if nothing else, you won’t regret clicking play on that video (high-five!) and you sure as the sun won’t regret heading on over to Flying Dog Brewery this weekend to check it all out live (double high-five!). We mean, come on: Life is far too busy to waste time worrying about regrets anyway, right? Right. So sit back, reserve the next five minutes to see what these guys bring to the table, head on over to snatch up a ticket for the weekend festivities, or, as we just mentioned, enter our free giveaway. There are so many options, it would be a travesty if you went music-less this weekend. Or a sham. Or a mockery. Or a travi-sham-ockery. Or, well, you get it.
Behold our first giveaway in conjunction with the lovely, lovely people at Flying Dog: Two tickets to see JJ Grey & Mofro live and in color this Saturday night at Flying Dog Brewery. How can you win? Well, there’s a plethora of ways. And because we enjoy lists, the word “plethora” and bullet points more than we do pretty much anything else in the English language, here’s the list:
– Or simply answer the below question (though be aware: Anyone who picks any answer with the words “Natural” or “Light” in them will automatically be disqualified. Just kidding. Maybe).
Got all that? Good. Now have a listen to our brand new playlist that features the bands set to come to town this weekend. Or press play on the video above to hear JJ Grey and Mofro’s “The Sun Is Shining Down.” Or buy a six-pack of Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale. Or simply do all of the above. Any or all would make us smile from ear to shining ear.
And because what’s a contest without logistics … the winner will be determined on Friday at midnight and we will be in touch with you later that day to let you know if you’re the lucky dude or dudette. Better yet, if you seem like a fairly good person, we might be inclined to throw in a few free beer koozies along with the two tickets as well. Now get ready, friends. Flying Dog is about to bring the (southern) rock.
All right. So, we here at Frederick Playlist are pleased as punch (or, well, Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale) to announce a working relationship with the world-famous, awesomest-of-awesome, resident Frederick, Maryland, Brewery of Choice, Flying Dog, as the fine people over there get set to kick off their outdoor concert series, Summer Sessions.
This makes sense, why? Because music and beer go together like Iron and Wine (get it?!). No, but seriously: The wonderful people over there are bringing in some pretty great shows this summer and we want to make sure you — yes, you! — are acquainted with all the fabulous artists about to invade Frederick.
What does this mean? Well, it means that we’ll have a presence at each of the four events scheduled to go down from now until September. It also means that you, the fantastically music-and-beer-loving Frederick Playlist reader, will be subject to various amounts of coverage regarding each artist that’s set to appear at these events. Yes. That includes the opening acts.
In addition to some interviews, some videos, some pictures and some other things we have in store, we’ll also be offering up … wait for it … free tickets to each of the shows. In order to distribute these, we’ll have contests, drawings, random acts of competition and perhaps a good, old-fashioned joust to see who really wants to be the lucky winner.
Wait. We just received word that jousting is off the table. Sad face.
Anyway, as for whom exactly it is that the lovely people at Flying Dog are bringing into this fine city, let’s have a look:
Saturday, June 28 – JJ Grey and Mofro; Thomas Wynn and the Believers
Saturday, July 19 – Lucero; Brooks Long & The Mad Dog No Good
Saturday, August 23 – J Roddy Walston and the Business; Old Indian
Saturday, September 27 – Real Estate; Heavy Lights
That sounds pretty great, now, doesn’t it!? (That’s rhetorical).
You can find tickets to all these events at FlyingDogTix.com and they’ll run you about 25 bucks. As an added bonus this year, there is also a package that includes roundtrip Baltimore bus transportation, and those tickets will run you $40. Indeed, we are all thinking the same thing: That’s not a lot of money, but that’s a whole ton-bunch of fun.
So, check back here periodically over the next few months to learn a thing or 39 about the bands comin’ to town this summer. Or to learn how to win a few tickets here and there. Or to remind yourself of how fantastic Flying Dog beer is. Or to support local music. Or to tell us to how you feel about the weather. Either way, we’ll be here, doing all we can to make sure you’re good and ready once these fabulous musicians come to Fabulous Frederick, Maryland.
Oh, and Happy Summer!
