What happens when Kenneth Husband calls? You pick up the phone. You also listen. And then you say “yes” a few times. And then you hang up the phone. Behold a new song from the man himself up top, accompanied by a few words below …
I don’t think you know it when you are having the best day of your life. I think, if you are lucky, you realize in a moment of quiet contemplation that your experience was more meaningful or sustaining than you thought.
Last summer, I was staying with my wife, Lindsay, and my pup, SugarBear, in a shady little bungalow in Ocean Pines, Maryland. One day, I found myself under a perfectly clear blue sky on a rented surfboard bobbing up and down on the low tide. I looked back to the shore and saw the love of my life playing in the sand with our fun-loving puppy as three majestic wild horses ran free in the surf. Later that evening, we sat quietly on a sleepy porch in rocking chairs drinking margaritas and I started singing this song as a little joking way of recounting our day — but then I kept going and all the verses came out in one long improvisation and the song, which I had no intention of writing, was finished.
I wasn’t even holding a guitar. I just heard the chords in my head. As we were laying in bed that night, I remember saying to Lindsay, “That might have been the best day of my life” and as the words came out of my mouth, I realized they were true in a beautiful and horrifying way. The day was already over. So, as the end of this summer creeps over the horizon into view and I feel a familiar annual melancholy creep in with it, I am very glad to share my little time-capsule of a perfect summer day with you. I hope it stirs up your own memories of good times and also soothes that ache as we smell the first faint whiff of autumn leaves.
Your Brother in Friendship and Wonderment,
Kenneth Husband
(But that’s MR. Husband to YOU!)
