Frederick One Take: Jeff Cosgrove Trio

You know the drill. A little while ago, two fine young men, Kenny Eaton and Jordan Miller, approached us with an idea for a partnership: Bring bands into Kenny’s Mystery Ton Studios, ask them to record a song, sit them down for an interview, video everything, and release all of it to the masses. Manning the cameras, of course, would be Jordan, along with his Gypsy Cab crew, and we would call the thing “Frederick One Take.”

This is typically where we run down through all the other episodes, recapping each guest and providing a link … but that list is becoming too long to constantly mention. So, instead, we’d love to encourage you to take a look at the Frederick One Take tag on this very website, or to head over to our YouTube channel to have a look at all the other wonderful videos that have come out of this tiny project. Frederick has some awfully remarkable musical talent in and around its parameters, you know.

Anyway, this month, we have a treat that rivals all other treats: The Jeff Cosgrove Trio. Featuring Cosgrove on drums, this iteration of the trio also includes Mark Leisher on bass and Brad Linde on saxophone. In addition to their performance, they stopped by to talk about the current state of jazz music, its future, how they came together and why some of them may not approve of the name “Jeff Cosgrove Trio” (kidding!). We had a blast recording this one and if there’s one thing you YouTube all day, friends, we sincerely hope it involves these two videos.

The Weekend Playlist: 03/23/17

Wait. Something looks different, does it not? Anyway, we thought we’d share this video, from our YouTube page. Why? Because Mr. Matt Traks is going to be taking the Flying Dog tap room stage this evening as part of that fine establishment’s Thursday Night Live series. As you’ll find if you click the “play” button above, this video features him covering an Incubus song. You’re welcome. Also this weekend, a brand new magazine is going to be released out into the wild at Guido’s and in conjunction with as much, The dRIVIN BEATS are going to perform. So, boom goes that dynamite. There’s some jazz. There’s the regular slate of open mic nights. There’s some Doc Martens. There’s Willie and his Chaperones. There’s Ginada Pinata. There’s an open ukulele jam, for goodness gracious sakes. And, of course, something called Beelzefuzz. The weather is set to be warm this weekend. Enjoy it. Love you. Miss you.

Anyway, over the weekend, some of us wandered over to Cafe Nola to check out the fabulous Karen Jonas perform and we took a couple videos. Among them is the one above these words, featuring the title track off her latest set, “Oklahoma Lottery.” The crowd was noisy, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t awesomer than awesome. Introducing Frederick Playlist’s YouTube Channel

All right, so here’s the deal: YouTube channels are dicey. We know. We get it. Sometimes, artists are apprehensive about less-than-stellar-quality video of their performances being out there. Sometimes, people simply just don’t enjoy being videoed. Sometimes, there’s some annoying group of friends around you when you take said video and their dialogue drowns out most of the music you’re trying to hear.

Again: We get it. We know all of these things.

But riddle us this: How else are people supposed to find out about local artists, especially if the local artists have either A) never been into a studio or B) never had the money and/or time and/or resources to help spread the word about what they do? So often people tell us they’d love to check out a local band or go to a weekend show … but they have no idea what they’re getting into, so instead of opting for the local talent, they decide to listen to the radio and go see the new “Planet Of The Apes” movie. It’s sad, really. Sadder than sad.

Thus, behold our brand-new YouTube channel. Ready for this ridiculous link? Good:

The point of the channel is to help visualize the Frederick music scene. Yes, until we get any money (read: never), these things will be lo-fi, and yes, the production will more often than not be suspect (read: from a mobile device). And as you’ll see if you click over, there’s also a good possibility that some of the clips won’t even be of full songs. No matter. All we want to do is help spread the word about all the great things this music scene can offer. Nothing more. Nothing less. If someone asks us to take down a video, we will happily comply. If someone whines about the quality of a video, we would like to offer the following preemptive strike in return: WAHHHHHH!

Either way, this tiny channel, to us at least, is worth it. It allows readers and local music fans alike to actually check out some of the stuff that’s going down in and around Frederick. Why? Because words can only convey so much and playlists can only spin so many times before you want to get a sense of what the real thing is like. That’s why. So, click on over, have a look at any of our videos (there are only five for now, but that’s going to grow; trust us), and check back to see what other goodies we might be able to compile as we set forth on this mission to make Frederick a legitimate destination for anyone looking to consume great local original music. There’s just too much wonderful stuff happening to turn a blind eye toward it all. So, put on some glasses, grab some headphones, and have a look.
