Frederick News-Post’s Frederick Playlist announced the lineup for the second-annual Frederick Music Showcase recently, to be held once again at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Featuring some of the top bands and musicians of Frederick County, the showcase will take place Thursday, Feb. 18, beginning at 7 p.m. The lineup is set to include Retro/Ricole, Katie Powderly & The Unconditional Lovers, Silent Old Mtns. and Freddie Long.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at WeinbergCenter.org, by calling the box office at 301-600-2828, or in person at 20 W. Patrick St. Tickets will also be available day of at the door.
2016 LINEUP
M/C Retro/Ricole appeared first to the listening public as a member of Center Of Attention (later changing their name to Razor Eaterz) in 2005, and gained further notoriety when his 2010 LP “Passion Park” was released. Equipped with the ability to explore all subgenres of hip hop and beyond, Retro/Ricole uses the song landscape as his iPad of sorts, and each world is an app. Retro/Ricole has performed at many venues in the DMV and abroad. He’s shared his music with major hip hop artists such as Wale, Wiz Kahlifa and Yelawolf.
Singer-songwriter Katie Powderly has been seen on PBS and NPR, and has toured from New York to Colorado, Texas to Tennessee. She has shared bills with Tony Rice, Del McCoury Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Black Lillies, Lake Street Dive, Langhorne Slim, The David Mayfield Parade, Woody Pines, Jill Andrews, The Honeycutters, J.P. Harris & The Tough Choices, The Deadstring Brothers, and many others. Her singing and harmonies have been likened to Gillian Welch (Isthmus, Madison, Wisconsin) and Gram Parsons (City Paper, Rochester, New York) The Unconditional Lovers consist of Kevin Etzler, Colin Shultzaberger, Neil Durr and Evan Durr. Powderly and the Unconditional Lovers are currently recording an LP in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Silent Old Mtns. is an American indie rock band formed in Frederick in 2011 by singer-songwriter Andrew Bromhal. They have released one full-length album and are most noted for their energetic and theatrical live shows. They are also well-known for their promotion of the indie music scene and DIY ethic: touring the country in a repurposed school bus and averaging more than 100 live performances per year, despite having no corporate backing. DC Rock Live music blog’s David Hintz describes their sound as “a whacked-out brand of Americana folk rock that dives headlong into psyche terrain frequently.”
Freddie Long’s music has been described as a “T-shirt and jeans blend of pop, rock, soul and honesty.” Long has performed on commercial TV and radio and has shared stages with many popular regional and national acts including Motley Crue, Poison, Bad Company, Jo Dee Messina, Edwin McCain, Blue Oyster Cult, Orleans, Jimmie‘s Chicken Shack, Shooter Jennings, Blind Melon, Pat McGee, Mark Bryan (of Hootie and the Blowfish), Scott Ambush (of Spyro Gyra) and several others. His band’s 2007 debut independent album, “Strangers and Friends,” has been praised by critics and fans alike; the album won Indie-Music.com’s Top 25 Releases of 2007 award. In 2011, Long released an acoustic album recorded at Rough Edges Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, with guitarist Christopher Bell. In the last several years, he has written, recorded and performed jingles for commercial radio and has had his music licensed and played internationally.
