The Nighthawks don’t really need to release albums anymore. They’ve played with Pinetop Perkins, welcomed Warren Haynes, backed up Elvin Bishop and opened for everyone from Muddy Waters to Carl Perkins. As far as the D.C.-area blues scene goes, they’ve long been one of the marquee names, having played as a unit since 1974 (which varying lineup changes, of course). They tour nationally. They have released dozens of records. They won Acoustic Album of the Year at the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Awards in May 2011.
They are — relatively speaking, at least — a big deal.
Yet still they grace us with more recordings, more products. “Back Porch Party,” the band’s latest live and acoustic set, might be light on new material, but it sure packs the type of authentic punch that the best Nighthawks albums offer. Recorded at Montrose Studio in Richmond, Virginia, in front of a seemingly small crowd ready to play their part, these 12 performances are a delight and a lesson: the former, because the ‘Hawks can still do this type of thing all these years later, and the latter because there are few people in this area who have mastered traditional blues as well as these guys have through the years.
It begins with “Rock This House,” a song you’ve probably heard 10,000 times. But despite its ubiquitousness, these guys make it pop, turned-down instruments and all. Plus, it sets the mood for a wildly fun evening, demonstrating beyond the shadow of a doubt that plugged in or not, there’s still a nest of energy begging to be found within acoustic instruments. When Mark Stutso takes a tiny solo on his single drum about halfway through, it’s interesting enough to engage 50 or 5,000 people. Ditto for guitarist Paul Bell’s acoustic shredding. Jimmie Rodgers would be proud.
Speaking of blues legends, Willie Dixon’s “Tiger In Your Tank” keeps the tempo up, a train beat fueled by a single snare doing its best to keep the engine revved. Matching that energy, note for note, is Mark Wenner’s harmonica, which trades lines with the vocals in a back-and-forth repetition that keeps all ears on alert at all times. Ike Turner’s “Matchbox” goes on to boogie its way through the set, losing nothing due to a lack of electricity. In fact, each time the chorus ends with the song’s signature, “Got my clothes in a matchbox/I’m gonna forget about you,” the line loses none of its bite despite the simplistic arrangement.
But to play the blues, you have to be willing slow it down with effect, and The Nighthawks wouldn’t have the longevity they’ve enjoyed if they couldn’t do as much. “Rollin’ Stone” is a trip to a back porch in the Delta, its swampy feel making for a muggy listen, complete with traditional guitar noodling and a spastic harp that rolls like the stone these guys are singing about. “Down To My Last Million Tears” speeds the formula up slightly, but it cuts even deeper, especially with an opening shout like this: “You made me cry.”
Such sadness is alleviated, though, when Tom Waits’ “Way Down In The Hole” gets a clever makeover and forces a smile across any fan of “The Wire” as wide and white as anything painted on McNulty’s face. This take stays true to form for the most part, that slithering bass line immediately recognizable and those harmonica chirps laying claim to their territory. It gets fun when, about two minutes into it, the guys switch up the groove, turning into a straight blues for a handful of measures before getting back to the sounds any Stringer Bell fan should know by heart. If nothing else, the band earns all of the cool points for something like this.
Even though saying as much is a bit reductive at this point: The Nighthawks probably have all of the cool points anyway. Check out the lone original, “Back To The City,” to remind yourself of how great they are at doing what they do. The track is a throwback to the juke joints that inspired the band to form in the first place. It’s a little rockabilly, a little blues, a little swing, and a lot of fun. The song a tiny piece of perfection working as an ending note on a record that strips these guys down at the compromise of nothing.
And that makes all the sense in the world for The Nighthawks in 2015. Do what you do. Do it as well as you’ve always done it. And allow the rest of the pieces to fall into place. That’s what “Back Porch Party” does best: It reminds longtime fans that these guys are still on their A-game all the while inviting other listeners to get hip to what they’ve been doing for decades now.
Back porch or no porch, this is a party you can’t miss. Don’t be late.
