The final podcast of 2013 brings us Frederick indie rock outfit Heavy Lights. With Ryan Nicholson singing and playing guitar,Chris Morris hammering on the drums, Brian Weakly playing bass and Derek Salazar rounding it all out with keys, vocals and guitar, the quartet recently finished up recording an as-yet-untitled full-length record that is set to be released soon. I spoke with them before one of their practices on the second floor of Cafe Nola all the way back in October.
Among the things we discuss:
– Who and what influences the guys the most (there’s some old and some new).
– Does Frederick have a large talent pool of musicians and will there ever be a solution to the ever-present original-music venue problem the city has.
– Why the guys decided to move in a different direction artistically after their former group, The Old Liners, called it a day.
– And what should we expect from this brand new Heavy Lights album.
In addition to all that, the guys offered up three – three! – brand spankin’ new, world-premiere songs fresh off the mixing board that are set to appear on their upcoming record. There’s a lot to hear folks, so you don’t want to miss this. For those looking for more information on the band, check out their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HeavyLights or their bandcamp profile at http://heavylightsmusic.bandcamp.com. As always, a big, old holiday Thank You to the three of you still listening and here’s hoping for more local music and more For The Record podcasts in 2014 (fingers crossed)!
